Betsy Maddox - New York City

Betsy Maddox, our missionary to New York City children has served through Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) for over 20 years.

Betsy's Story

Betsy and her husband, Tom, moved to New York City in 1987 as missionaries. They used after-school clubs, summer clubs, holiday parties and sports to reach the children with the good news of Jesus Christ. Then, 8 years later, Tom was diagnosed with cancer. 5 months after that, he passed away. Despite adversity, Betsy decided to stay (along with their 4 children) in New York City serving with CEF. Today she is Executive Director of Greater New York City CEF.

What Betsy Does

Over 190 nations are represented in the New York City public school system. In the clubs Betsy teaches, she has children who are West African, Indian, Chinese, Jamaican, Italian, Greek, Irish, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and many more. "The world is at our doorstep," she says.

The purpose of her ministry is to share the good news of Jesus with children, disciple them in the Bible, and connect them in a local church. They accomplish this through a variety of ministries including:
Good News Clubs: Weekly Bible Clubs
Party Clubs: Typically holiday parties
5-Day Clubs: Weeklong clubs during the summer
Mailbox Club: Bible lessons by mail
She personally teaches four Good News Clubs each week in a church, a Christian school, a public school, and a Liberian Cultural Center.

Update

Last year staff and volunteers at CEF New York were able to reach 22,333 children with the good news and 1,096 gave their lives to Christ. Over 1500 children were enrolled in discipleship classes (Good News Clubs and monthly party clubs).

Her children, Josiah, Micah, Hannah and Libby are invaluable helpers in the ministry and are now 16, 18,  20 & 21 years old.
